Sunday Broadsheet

The Big Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi’an has a history spanning more than 1,300 years, dating back to the Tang Dynasty. It was originally constructed as a place to preserve Buddhist scriptures written in Sanskrit, which the famous monk Xuanzang brought back from India after his remarkable 17-year journey across Central Asia and India.

As one of the finest examples of ancient Buddhist architecture in China, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda has become an important cultural landmark and is widely regarded as a symbol of Xi’an, the ancient capital of several Chinese dynasties.

Historic Carvings and Architectural Treasures

The base of the pagoda contains four stone doors decorated with beautiful carvings from the Tang Dynasty period. These detailed engravings showcase the exceptional artistic skills and craftsmanship of ancient Chinese artisans.

On both sides of the southern entrance, two stone tablets are embedded into the walls. They feature the famous “Preface to the Sacred Religion,” written by the renowned Tang Dynasty calligrapher Chu Suiliang. The western stone gate is decorated with carved Buddhist motifs and architectural patterns, displaying a carefully arranged design with elegant lines and remarkable artistic value.

Cultural Traditions and Literary Connections

Since the Tang Dynasty, the area around the Big Wild Goose Pagoda has hosted traditional temple fairs on the 14th, 15th, and 16th days of the first lunar month. Over time, these gatherings became not only religious events but also important cultural occasions where scholars and intellectuals met.

During the imperial examination era, successful candidates often visited the pagoda and left their names engraved on its walls, a tradition known as the “Inscription at the Wild Goose Pagoda.” Many famous writers and historical figures also left behind poems and literary works inspired by the pagoda and its surroundings.

Enjoying the View from the Pagoda

Climbing to the top of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda offers visitors a wonderful panoramic view of Xi’an city and the surrounding countryside. From this height, travelers can appreciate the contrast between the ancient landmark and the modern city below.

For a more comfortable visit, it is recommended to climb the pagoda early in the morning or later in the afternoon, especially during busy tourist seasons when waiting times can become longer.

How Solar Panels Are Changing the Clean Energy World

A solar panel is a device that changes sunlight directly into clean electricity. These units use interconnected photovoltaic modules made of specialized semiconductor materials. Sunlight strikes these materials and energizes tiny subatomic particles called electrons. These moving electrons create a steady direct current that powers electrical devices or charges storage batteries. People frequently refer to these units as solar modules or photo electric panels.
