Welcome to the third chapter of Legacy Watch, an educational series dedicated to celebrating Africa’s remarkable wildlife. These stories about threatened mammals were created by a conservation pioneer and were originally shared with children during storytelling sessions and around campfires. Today, they are available online to help families learn more about wildlife protection and inspire the next generation to care for animals. In this edition, we explore two extraordinary endangered mammals: the powerful African elephant and the impressive rhinoceros.
Let these fascinating facts encourage curiosity and a deeper respect for the natural world.
The African Elephant: A Gentle Giant of the Wild
The African elephant is one of the most iconic animals on the planet. Recognized by its enormous ears, powerful trunk, and impressive tusks, this remarkable creature is often described as a gentle giant. The word “elephant” has interesting origins, combining the Latin term “phan,” meaning “large,” and the Greek word “ele,” meaning “arch.”
These enormous mammals can reach weights of up to 6,200 kilograms and require huge amounts of food and water to survive. An adult elephant may eat around 300 kilograms of vegetation and drink approximately 200 litres of water every day.
Despite their incredible size and strength, elephants face serious threats from human activity. In Africa, illegal hunting remains a major danger, with an elephant being killed by poachers approximately every 10 minutes. Regions in East Africa have experienced some of the most severe impacts from this devastating practice.
The Rhinoceros: A Powerful Symbol Under Threat
The rhinoceros is another magnificent African animal facing a dangerous future. Its name comes from Greek words meaning “nose” and “horn,” referring to the distinctive horn growing on its snout. Unlike true horns made of bone, a rhino’s horn is formed from tightly packed keratin fibers, the same material found in human hair and fingernails.
Unfortunately, rhino horns are highly valued in illegal markets because of false beliefs about their supposed healing properties. This demand has caused devastating consequences, with around three rhinos being illegally killed every day in South Africa.
Although the number of poaching cases has decreased compared with previous years, every loss remains a serious concern. Continued protection efforts and stronger action are essential to end this cruel trade and safeguard rhino populations.
Protecting Africa’s Wildlife Together
We sincerely thank everyone who has followed and supported this series. Your interest, awareness, and dedication play an important role in helping protect endangered species.
By sharing knowledge and encouraging conservation, we can work together to preserve Africa’s incredible wildlife and create a safer future for elephants, rhinos, and many other threatened animals for generations to come.
