Sunday Broadsheet

After testing dozens of folding electric bikes throughout 2026, we selected the models that received the highest overall ratings. These folding e-bikes stood out for their lightweight designs, portability, riding performance, battery range, comfort, and innovative features.

ADO Air Carbon, £1,799: “So lightweight, you almost forget it’s electric”

The ADO Air Carbon is the lightest folding electric bike we have tested, and its low weight is immediately noticeable. Built with a carbon fiber frame and a sleek modern appearance, it feels more like a premium city bicycle than a traditional electric bike.

When you start pedaling, the BAFANG motor provides smooth and natural assistance, making climbs much easier. The torque sensor delivers accurate power adjustment according to your riding effort, while hydraulic brakes and the belt drive system create a quiet, refined experience.

The bike also features smart technology, including GPS tracking and movement alerts through the ADO mobile application, making it a highly advanced commuter option.

Although the lightweight frame is impressive, the technology-focused design means it does not fold into the smallest package compared with some competitors. However, for urban riders who want a stylish, intelligent, and extremely lightweight folding e-bike, the ADO Air Carbon remains one of the strongest choices.

Pros: Extremely lightweight, smooth motor assistance, torque sensor, GPS security, belt drive, hydraulic brakes

Cons: Premium price, not the most compact when folded

Lemmo Zero, £2,160.06

The Lemmo Zero is one of the lightest folding electric bikes available, with a total weight of only 13.1kg. The bicycle itself weighs 10.8kg, while the battery adds just 2.3kg.

Although it is slightly heavier than the ADO Air Carbon, the Lemmo Zero has a unique advantage: it is designed to be suitable for air travel. Its extremely compact folding structure allows it to fit inside a suitcase, and the 159Wh battery meets carry-on requirements.

Its innovative folding system allows the rear wheel to slide through the frame, reducing the folded size significantly. In fact, it can become even smaller than a Brompton Electric.

Despite its compact dimensions, the bike still offers practical riding features. It comes with five gears, making it suitable for both flat streets and moderate hills. The 30Nm motor is not the most powerful, but because the entire bike is so light, it performs well in daily use.

Instead of a traditional handlebar display, riders control assistance levels through buttons on the front stem or through the smartphone app. A phone holder is included, allowing the phone to work as a digital display.

Pros: Lightweight construction, smallest folding size, airplane-friendly battery, easy to ride without assistance, strong brakes

Cons: No built-in screen, limited range

The Lemmo Zero is a standout folding e-bike thanks to its innovative design, portability, and excellent everyday practicality.

ADO Air 20, from £999

The ADO Air 20 combines compact folding ability with the stability of larger 20-inch wheels. Compared with many folding electric bikes that use 16-inch wheels, this design provides a more comfortable and confident riding experience.

Its single-speed carbon belt drive requires less maintenance than a traditional chain system. The bike feels quick, responsive, and easy to handle while maintaining a manageable weight of 18kg.

Although this version does not include suspension, riders can choose the upgraded ADO Air 20 PRO model with front suspension.

Hydraulic brakes are included as standard, providing strong stopping performance and improving safety. The torque sensor also allows the motor to respond naturally according to how much force the rider applies.

During testing, the bike reached the assisted speed limit quickly and maintained smooth power delivery. The narrower handlebars also helped it move through crowded streets and tight spaces.

Pros: Comfortable, powerful, responsive, good battery range

Cons: No suspension on standard version, folding magnetic catch is optional

Engwe P20, £1,199

The Engwe P20 is one of the most visually appealing folding electric bikes in this selection. Its clean design and modern appearance make it a strong competitor among premium urban folders.

The riding experience is especially impressive. Similar to the ADO Air 20, it uses a carbon belt drive instead of a traditional chain, reducing maintenance while creating a smooth and quiet ride.

The puncture-resistant Kenda tires help absorb bumps and improve comfort, although this bike is mainly designed for city riding rather than demanding off-road conditions.

Engwe states that the P20 can be folded in around 10 seconds. After becoming familiar with the folding process, it is simple and convenient to operate.

Another useful feature is the integrated turn signals, which improve visibility and safety while riding.

Pros: Smooth riding experience, easy maintenance, quick folding system

Cons: No suspension

Hygge Virum, £1,399: “Effortless urban transportation”

The Hygge Virum is designed for modern city commuters who need a lightweight, stylish, and practical folding e-bike.

At 18kg, it is easy to carry and folds quickly, making it suitable for riders with limited storage space. The 250W motor provides smooth assistance up to 15.5mph, while Shimano 8-speed gears and Tektro hydraulic brakes add premium quality.

The hidden 36V Samsung battery inside the seat post keeps the design clean and provides enough range for everyday commuting.

Although its official range is not the highest in this category, real-world testing showed that Hygge’s range claims are accurate and reliable.

For riders wanting a simple, attractive, and dependable folding commuter bike, the Virum is a strong option.

Pros: Lightweight, compact, Shimano gears, hydraulic brakes, hidden battery, stylish design

Cons: Limited color choices

Volt Lite, £2,899: “The best folding e-bike I’ve ridden”

After testing many folding electric bikes, the Volt Lite stands out as one of the most impressive models.

It uses a BAFANG M820 mid-drive motor combined with a carbon belt drive system. The motor produces 75Nm of torque, which is unusually powerful for a compact folding bike.

This extra power makes it especially suitable for heavier riders or commuters who regularly encounter steep hills. Testing showed that the bike handled challenging climbs with confidence.

The combination of belt drive and three-speed hub gears improves versatility and makes climbing easier.

The battery is integrated into the seat post and can be removed for charging or security. Comfort is another major strength, with a saddle design suitable for both men and women.

Pros: Excellent components, strong performance, comfortable ride

Cons: Expensive

The Volt Lite is a premium folding e-bike, but its quality and performance match its higher price.

ADO Air 20 PRO, £1,499

The ADO Air 20 PRO is the upgraded version of the standard Air 20, offering several improvements.

The biggest upgrade is the addition of front suspension, which provides a smoother ride on uneven roads, rough paths, and city streets with potholes.

Another major improvement is the automatic two-speed BAFANG motor. The system detects climbing situations and adjusts automatically, providing extra torque when needed.

For riders living in hilly areas, the Air 20 PRO offers a noticeable advantage over the standard model.

Pros: Smooth ride, better climbing ability, low maintenance

Cons: Higher price than the standard Air 20

Engwe Engine X, £1,049: “Best value folding fat-tire e-bike”

The Engwe Engine X delivers excellent value with its large battery, wide tires, mechanical disc brakes, and full suspension system.

Testing showed that it performs well on both city roads and light off-road surfaces. The fat tires provide extra stability and comfort when riding over uneven ground.

The biggest disadvantage is its weight. At nearly 32kg, it is difficult to carry when folded. However, the additional weight also improves stability while riding.

Pros: Affordable, comfortable, versatile

Cons: Heavy frame

Ryd Bike Aero 16, £1,300.32

The Ryd Bike Aero 16 is one of the lightest folding electric bikes available, weighing only 14kg.

Its low weight makes it ideal for commuters who need to carry their bike upstairs, store it under a desk, or take it on public transportation.

The design focuses on durability and easy maintenance. It avoids welded joints that may weaken over time and uses a carbon belt drive instead of a traditional metal chain.

The bike also features integrated lighting, a rear rack capable of carrying up to 25kg, and a discreet seat-post battery.

The removable battery improves security because it can be taken indoors for charging or removed when parking outside.

Its compact folding size makes it especially suitable for apartments and riders with limited storage space.

How We Test Folding Electric Bikes

Our expert testers ride every folding e-bike under real-world conditions, including city streets, rough surfaces, and controlled testing environments.

Each bike is evaluated based on folding speed, portability, riding comfort, motor performance, braking ability, battery performance, and overall practicality.

After learning the folding process, we measure how quickly each bike can be packed away and test how easy it is to move while folded.

We also examine folding locks, storage convenience, and whether parts such as chains or cables create problems when transporting or storing the bike.

Through detailed testing, we identify which folding electric bikes offer the best combination of performance, convenience, durability, and everyday usability.

The Purple Swamphen

Last spring, during a three-month study abroad program in South Africa, I finally encountered one of my long-awaited lifer birds, the Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio). I spotted it partially concealed among reeds in a large wetland within Wilderness National Park. After noticing me, the bird hurried across the water, attempting to disappear into the reeds on the opposite side of the shallow stream.

10 Captivating Ancient Reliefs and Stone Carvings: Windows to Civilizations Past

From the earliest days of human existence, when our ancestors etched primitive symbols into cave walls, the urge to create has been an intrinsic part of what it means to be human. As civilizations evolved, so too did artistic expression—from simple rock engravings to elaborate sculptures and reliefs that adorned temples, palaces, and sacred sites. Unlike paintings or textiles, which are often fragile and susceptible to decay, stone carvings and reliefs possess a remarkable durability. Carved into hard materials like sandstone, granite, and limestone, they have survived for thousands of years, offering us a direct window into the past.
