The Americano Coffee Is an Ode to Simplicity
It’s difficult to say exactly when the Americano became my preferred espresso-based drink. Perhaps it’s because it usually costs less than a latte while still offering a larger serving size than drinks like a cortado. Or maybe it’s simply because it shares its name with the Americano cocktail, one of my personal favorites.

Whatever the reason, this coffee is a straightforward yet deeply satisfying espresso drink that deserves more appreciation.
What Makes Americano Coffee Special
According to Cary Wong, Director of Coffee at Partners Coffee, the Americano is valued for its balance between strength and volume. “We love Americanos because they allow you to still experience the flavor and complexity of espresso, but in a more diluted, larger format,” he explains.
He also notes that adding water can actually highlight the nuances of single-origin espresso. The dilution softens intensity, making complex flavor notes easier to notice and enjoy. In some cases, it serves as a convenient alternative to drip coffee when brewing equipment is not available.
What Is an Americano Coffee?
A traditional Americano is made using only two components: espresso and hot water, typically ranging from about 8 to 12 ounces of water per shot. Some people prefer using a double shot of espresso, adjusting the water ratio to maintain balance.
The preparation order can vary. One common method is adding hot water first and then pouring espresso over it. Another method is brewing espresso first and then adding water. The latter is often called a “Long Black,” where the crema is preserved more prominently on top.
Wong explains that their preferred method is to add espresso into hot water, although both approaches are widely accepted depending on taste and texture preference.
Why the Americano Name Exists
The origin of the name dates back to World War II. American soldiers stationed in Italy reportedly found traditional espresso too strong for their liking. To make it more palatable, local cafés began diluting espresso with hot water.
This modified version became known as “caffè Americano,” a name that has remained ever since.
How to Make an Iced Americano
An iced Americano is a chilled variation of the drink. Instead of hot water, cold water is used to dilute espresso, creating a refreshing coffee beverage served over ice.
It is often considered a lighter alternative to cold brew, offering a similar refreshing quality with a more direct espresso flavor profile.

Though often associated with childhood, ice cream transcends age, evoking delight and nostalgia in equal measure. From ancient history to contemporary creations, frozen treats have evolved globally. Historical accounts trace the earliest versions to the time of Alexander the Great, who enjoyed chilled mixtures sweetened with honey. The Roman Emperor Nero is also said to have favored snow infused with fruits and juices. Centuries later, Marco Polo is believed to have returned from Asia with a sherbet-style recipe, paving the way for what would become modern ice cream in Europe. While ice cream as we know it is popular worldwide, nearly every country has a unique take on the chilled indulgence. From Asia to the Americas, here’s how different cultures reimagine this frozen pleasure:
