Dolphins are among the most intelligent animals in the ocean and are widely admired for their playful behaviour and close interactions with humans. There are more than 40 known dolphin species, which are divided into six different families. Some animals commonly called whales, such as the killer whale and pilot whale, are actually dolphin species despite their names.

Dolphins can be found in oceans, seas, rivers, and lakes across the world. They are highly social creatures that live in groups called pods. Within these communities, dolphins cooperate while hunting, communicate through sounds and movements, and develop strong relationships with other members of their group.

As meat-eating predators, dolphins mainly consume fish, squid, and sometimes small crustaceans. They rely on echolocation to detect, track, and capture their prey. By controlling populations of other marine animals, dolphins help maintain the balance and health of ocean ecosystems.

However, many dolphin populations are facing serious threats. Several species are declining because of habitat loss, human activity, pollution, and other environmental pressures. Conservation groups such as IFAW are working to protect dolphins and preserve the habitats they depend on.

What Is the Scientific Name of Dolphins?

The scientific classification for dolphins, whales, and porpoises belongs to the order Cetacea. The word “dolphin” generally describes toothed whales that are part of the Delphinidae family, which includes oceanic dolphins, as well as river dolphins from families such as Platanistidae and Iniidae.

Each dolphin species has its own scientific name. Some well-known examples include:

Common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)

Killer whale (Orcinus orca)

Spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris)

Atlantic white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus)

Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)

Are Dolphins Threatened With Extinction?

The conservation status of dolphins varies greatly depending on the species. Some populations are considered stable, while others are facing severe risks and are listed as endangered or critically endangered.

The Atlantic humpback dolphin is classified as critically endangered by the IUCN, with only around 1,500 individuals believed to remain in the wild. Hector’s dolphin, a species native to New Zealand and the smallest marine dolphin in the world, is considered endangered.

Other threatened species include the Irrawaddy dolphin, which lives in coastal areas of Southeast Asia, and the Ganges river dolphin, which inhabits freshwater environments. Both species have only a few thousand mature individuals remaining in nature.

Where Do Dolphins Live?

Dolphins inhabit a wide variety of aquatic environments, including oceans, coastal waters, rivers, and freshwater habitats. Their adaptability allows them to survive in many different conditions, from warm tropical seas to colder polar regions. Some of the most familiar species, including common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins, are usually found in warmer and temperate waters.

Although many dolphins are associated with the open ocean, some species prefer shallow coastal environments such as bays and estuaries where food is plentiful and shelter is available. These areas also bring dolphins closer to human activities, increasing the risks they face. Dolphins may also become stranded when they enter waters that are too shallow.

While dolphins are often thought of as purely marine animals, some species spend significant amounts of time in freshwater areas. River dolphins live entirely in freshwater systems and can be found far inland, thousands of kilometres away from the sea. In rare situations, dolphins have even been recorded living in freshwater lakes, including certain populations of Irrawaddy dolphins in Southeast Asia.

Sculpted by the Sea: The Dynamic Geology of Rocky Coastlines

The relentless pounding of surf and breaking waves has shaped rocky coasts into some of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth. Characterized by high-energy erosion, these coasts are typically found along active tectonic margins with narrow continental shelves. Composed of sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic rock, they bear witness to complex geological processes, including faulting, folding, and volcanic activity. The specific profile of a rocky coast—whether steep cliffs or gentle slopes—is dictated by the interplay of bedrock resistance, climate, and wave energy. For instance, the resistant lava flows of Kalaupapa National Historical Park (Hawaii) create towering sea cliffs, while the more erodible limestones of Dry Tortugas National Park (Florida) form gentler slopes. Glacial activity further sculpts these regions, carving deep fjords and depositing talus slopes, while carbonate coasts can lithify into eolianite dunes that later erode into steep bluffs.
